Modern Luxury and Traditional Hospitality: A Review of The Gate Hotel in Kyoto

When I’m traveling, there are a few things I always look for in a hotel. I’m not going to lie, I like a little bit of luxury. I spend a lot of time exploring so coming back to a hotel with a plush mattress and a touch of elegance when it comes to amenities are important to me. Location is also extremely important to me. I always have a lot on my list to see and I love to walk out the door and be in the middle of the action. 

For my stay in Kyoto, The Gate Hotel didn’t just meet my expectations, it far exceeded them. From the central location to the mind-blowing breakfast to the modern design of the hotel, this hotel took my stay in Kyoto to the next level.

Design and Atmosphere

Arriving to your Kyoto hotel is always an experience. The Gate Hotel boasts a sleek exterior, presenting itself to guests as a sophisticated home-away-from-home before they even enter. The design is an artful balance between honoring Kyoto’s cultural heritage and displaying a fresh and modern feel. 

When I entered The Gate Hotel I was immediately struck by the blend of contemporary design with traditional Japanese aesthetics. The lobby had high ceilings with minimalist decor, and the intentional inclusion of natural light with wood and stone made it spacious yet warm and cozy. 

Location

The prime location of The Gate Hotel was a major selling point for me, and I definitely didn’t regret my decision. Situated right in the heart of Kyoto, the hotel provides easy access to some iconic attractions. Its proximity to Pontocho Alley guarantees guests quick access to some of the best food in Kyoto, and the nearby Nishiki Market offers great shopping to those looking to spend some money. The famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple is just a short distance away, along with the historic streets of Gion, where visitors can experience traditional tea houses and possibly catch a glimpse of geishas.

Public transportation is plentiful nearby, which is handy whether you’re looking to stick close to the hotel or get out to other key sites like Nijo Castle or the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. If you’re more of a homebody, rest assured that there’s plenty to see – and taste – within walking distance. 

Amenities

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I love my little touches of luxury. If you’re looking for where to stay in Kyoto that will provide some exceptional comfort and elegance, The Gate is the place for you. 

The rooftop terrace at the hotel provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, grabbing a drink at the terrace and looking out over the city is a great way to spend some of your time. The terrace also hosts seasonal events regularly, so make sure you ask what’s on the calendar during your stay.

Fitness enthusiasts will be glad to know there’s a well-equipped gym (that is sparkling clean) at the hotel so you can relax while still hitting your fitness goals. Business travelers will find world-class facilities for meetings and events as well as a staff prepared to cater to your needs. 

The hotel also organizes various activities on-site including a samurai sword demonstration, traditional geisha shows, a Shakyo (Buddhist scripture transcription) experience, and morning yoga lessons. The hotel also can organize a guided kimono tour of the area, a sake brewery tour, and a paper crafting workshop.

It’s no surprise that the staff at the hotel exemplifies the renowned Japanese hospitality. Whether it’s assisting with reservations, providing local recommendations, or arranging transportation, the team goes above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay.

Dining

To be honest, one of the absolute highlights of my stay in Kyoto was the unbelievable breakfast at The Gate. The set meal is a very generous spread – a set menu of absolutely delicious Japanese food. If you’re looking to try a variety of flavors, this is for you. With sixteen (!) little dishes, it’s not only filling but also an adventure in trying new things. 

If you’re not as adventurous, their made-to-order menu is exceptional as well. I had the French toast and it was incredible. 

Beyond breakfast, the Anchor Restaurant in the hotel offers food all day with a panoramic view of Higashiyama. The restaurant offers seasonal menus and specialty cocktails that can be ordered in advance if you like. No matter what your budget, there’s an impressive selection of a la carte dishes as well as a great 5-course menu. 

Whether you’re in Kyoto for a short visit or an extended stay, deciding where to stay in Kyoto is a big decision. As far as I’m concerned, The Gate Hotel can’t be beat. With its stunning design, well-appointed accommodations, attentive service, and prime location, it caters to a wide range of guests, from solo travelers to families and business visitors.
